Testing is not Teaching! - PBC citizens united to make a difference!
Get ready for Round #4! We have been there three times already. The School Board still has not understood our messages. Johnson reassigned Hernandez, then he didn't. Johnson promised a manual. Johnson promised changes. Now we are facing Race to the Top. Johnson is comparing the loss of trust and confidence in him... to Tiger Woods. It is finally time to ask the Board to find a new Superintendent to lead our District into the world of education as learning, not education as performing. We need a new Board.
Let's call to be put on as non-agenda speakers - maybe the fourth time is the charm! We are still not on the agenda. Continue to write your letters.
Board Meeting (Agenda available approximately two weeks before meeting.) To speak, please contact Alicia Gent, Board Office, 561-434-8139.

Eileen The district's approach to eliminating the achievement gap reminds me of "HARRISON BERGERON" by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. This essay describes a society which has been equalized through handicapping all members so that no one has superior knowledge or abilities than the least of us. It seems to me that all students would be ...better served if we would help struggling students that the district identifies as minorities to achieve more and attempt to close the gap rather than keep the successful students from achieving to close the gap.

Testing is not Teaching! - PBC citizens united to make a difference! As we all know, today's Board Workshops were not televised. We ask that all those in attendence please comment below and summarize what happened. Until then, we are left with the comments of the press. Here is the Post's take on the Race to the Top portion of the Operations Workshop.

The Palm Beach County School board entered itself into competition for a piece of a $4 billion federal education grant, even as its members condemned the politics behind the program and admitted that county teachers may never agree to changes required to secure the funding.

OpEd in the Post: "In a meeting Tuesday morning, Palm Beach County School
Superintendent Art Johnson compared the school district's predicament
with that of Tiger Woods. As recounted by Dr. Johnson in an
interview, he told the gathering, "The district is a family, and Tiger
Woods had a family." The "faith and trust the co...mmunity had in us" has
been shaken, just as the golfer's affairs have shaken "the faith and
trust his family had in Tiger … There is no question we have lost a lot
of trust and faith (and) confidence on the part of the community."

Testing is not Teaching! - PBC citizens united to make a difference! Teachers' unions and some school district leaders object to some of the wording in Florida's 300-page proposal for a piece of the $4.35 billion federal grant, in part because it appears to require districts make every reform in every school. The money comes in part from Obama's economic stimulus plan. There also is con...cern that districts must adhere to a one-size-fits-all strategy imposed by the U.S. Department of Education, including the turn-around of troubled schools, and with only a year to do it.

Kelly I am a teacher at a community college. I am also the mother of 2 boys in elementary school - 1st grade and 4th grade. I know that "test scores" mean nothing to me, but mean THE WORLD to the administrators. I will continue to support my sons' teachers as they work in a system that is "test-driven". Thank you for this page!
