An outspoken critic of the human rights record of Libya, Jamal al-Hajji, was arrested on 9 December 2009 and apparently transferred to prison. Amnesty International considers him a prisoner of conscience, detained solely for his criticism of the Libyan authorities.

Ten human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, send an open letter to the Syrian Bar Association and the President of the Damascus section of the Syrian Bar Association, expressing concerns about the disciplinary hearing of Muhannad al-Hassani before the Bar Association.
Syrian human rights lawyer and... defender is currently detained awaiting trial for his human rights activities. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years imprisonment. At the same time the Syrian Bar Association has initiated a disciplinary action against al-Hassani that could see him banned from working as a lawyer.
